Local Cuisine

An important part of the Athabasca Country food experience is the food that is produced locally. Here you will find some of the finest in organic and traditionally produced vegetables, grains, beef, poultry and bison. Some of it grows wild and some of it is domestic, but it's all special, and it's waiting for you here in Athabasca Country.

Wild Rice

Actually a grain that is grown in local lakes, Lakeland Wild Rice is available year round. Order yours by contacting Alice Ptolemy at Whispering Hills Fabrics & Crafts 780.675.7075, or pick some up at the Visitor Information Centre during the summer months. For more information see the 'To Shop' section of this site.

Berries

Growing wild and wonderful, sweet delights like Saskatoon Berries, Blueberries and Wild Raspberries ripen mid-summer and provide nourishment and joy for humans and wildland friends alike. Sidle up to a local and ask about their favourite picking spots, or check out friendly u-pick places like Mr. V's, located at the junction of Highways 63 and 663. www.mrvs.net

Markets, farmer and otherwise

Fresh produce, baked goods and much more is available for sale at local farmers' markets and craft shows throughout the area. During the summer months, Athabasca holds a farmers' market every other Friday in the basement of the Legion. Find other market events in the pages of the local paper.

Community & Church Suppers

Grassroots and wonderful, community suppers are remarkably popular among locals in Athabasca Country. With menus of chicken, pancakes, spaghetti, roast beef, perogy or a host of other homemade treats, these mostly annual events bring together friends and neighbours for food and fellowship. Often held in conjunction with other events, pancake breakfasts are also popular here, and everyone is welcome. Check out the local paper for coming meals, or stop in to the Athabasca Seniors' Centre for their pancake breakfasts, held the last Tuesday of every month.

Ukrainian Delicacies

Immigrants from the Ukraine have played an important role in the development of Athabasca Country. Ukrainian culture endures in Athabasca Country, most notably in the form of food, like prohy (perogy), borscht (beet soup) and holubsti (cabbage rolls). Check out the local newspaper for listings of suppers and other events where you might find some of these delights.
